Nonprescription omeprazole is used to treat frequent heartburn (heartburn that occurs at least 2 days a week). Omeprazole is in a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach.Omeprazole comes as a delayed-release capsule (Prilosec) a nonprescription delayed-release tablet (Prilosec OTC) a powder for suspension (Zegerid) and a regular capsule (Zegerid). Refill the cup with water and drink the water to be sure that you swallow all of the medication.
